Choice Books is a national book distribution company whose field operations depended on legacy Windows-based scanners and Dot Matrix printers. These devices were expensive to replace, slow to update, and increasingly difficult to integrate with modern backend systems.

The company's logistics teams used this outdated hardware to manage deliveries, inventory checks, and catalog updates across thousands of retail interactions. Every scanner failure meant downtime, every software update required physical access to devices, and the help center was overwhelmed with support calls.

Choice Books needed a complete digital transformation: not just new software, but a fundamental shift from specialized hardware to standard mobile devices that could be updated, managed, and deployed at scale.

We designed, engineered, and deployed BookLink Mobile, a cross-platform enterprise application built with React Native and Next.js that replaces legacy scanners with standard mobile devices. The app combines scanning, data capture, and inventory management in one seamless experience.

The architecture leverages Azure and Atlas MongoDB for cloud data synchronization, with Realm providing real-time offline functionality, critical for delivery drivers working in low-connectivity environments. This means field operations continue uninterrupted regardless of network conditions.

The transformation was comprehensive: we sunset legacy hardware and Dot Matrix printers across vans and warehouses, built a modern mobile app integrated with server-side infrastructure, and established a scalable roadmap for continuous product evolution. Help center calls dropped dramatically, and data synchronization times were reduced by orders of magnitude.
